AGING AND DISABILITY SERVICES ADMINISTRATION
How to Become a Community Educator for Specialty Training
There are several classes that make up specialty training including mental health, dementia, and developmental disability training. Review the W.A.C. that defines specialty training.
This section of the site includes information on applying to teach mental health and dementia specialty training. If you are interested in teaching developmental disability training, contact Linda Gil at 360-725-3435 or by email at gilll@dshs.wa.gov.
To apply to become an independent instructor for specialty training:
- Review a summary of instructor qualifications (PDF file).
- Download and fill out an instructor application for any person who will be doing training. The PDF file can be printed and filled out by hand. The Word file can be completed as a form on your computer.
If you are applying to be both a dementia and a mental health instructor, you must submit separate applications.
- Send completed instructor application(s) to:

Review process
Once the instructor application has been received, it is reviewed for completeness and to ensure the instructor meets the minimum qualifications.
If the minimum requirements are met, potential instructors will be required to present a one hour seminar on a topic designated by ADSA staff for a review of the instructor’s competency.
Approved instructors will be asked to review, sign, and send in a Memorandum of Understanding (M.O.U.). An M.O.U. is a document that details all of training and administrative functions you agree to provide to offer training.
If you are not approved to offer training
If your application is not approved, you will be contacted directly to review or clarify any questions the reviewer may have, or receive a disapproval letter with this information.
