AASA: AFH #2002-017
SUBJECT: AFH APPLICATION
NEW WABO INSPECTION FORM REQUIREMENT

Dear Adult Family Home Provider:

Effective June 24, 2002, all adult family home (AFH) applications received by the Residential Care Services (RCS) Applications Unit and those currently in process will require documentation of an inspection of the prospective adult family home by a local building official, unless the home is currently licensed as an AFH. The applicant may have to pay for this inspection. To document this inspection, applicants are required to submit a Washington Association of Building Officials (WABO), “Request for Inspection – Adult Family Home” form completed and signed by their local building official to ensure that the home meets current building and fire safety codes for single-family dwellings.

This change in the AFH application process is the result of adult family homes being removed from Group Long-term Care Occupancy to Group R-3 Occupancy (single family dwellings) by the Washington Sate Building Code Council. As a result of this new requirement, RCS licensors will no longer conduct measurements of windows and windowsills as part of the initial licensing inspection (not re-inspection) process.

Should you choose to license another home, your local building official can be contacted to schedule an inspection. To obtain the inspection form, an inspection checklist, or find the building official in your area, visit the WABO website at www.wabo.org. If you have further questions, contact your local building official or your RCS Field Manager.

Sincerely,

Patricia K. Lashway, Director
