NURSE DELEGATION OF INSULIN INJECTIONS
Dear Certified Supported Living Service Provider/Administrator:
New law on nurse delegation of insulin injections:
- Recently the Governor signed Engrossed Second Substitute House Bill (E2SHB) 2668 into law. (An act relating to long-term care).
- Section 11 allows diabetic insulin device set up and verbal verification of insulin dosage for sight-impaired residents without delegation.
- Sections 11 and 12 include specific requirements related to the delegation of insulin injection.
- The law directs the department to develop training for nursing assistants regarding nurse delegation of insulin injections.
- A copy of the law is enclosed.
After June 12, 2008
You may:
- Begin allowing staff to set up diabetic insulin devices and verbally verifying insulin dosage for sight impaired residents; after
- Making sure that staff can do those tasks safely.
You cannot:
- Allow the delegation of insulin injections until certain requirements are met (probably after January 1, 2009).
The department:
- Anticipates implementing required training after January 1, 2009 for nursing assistants to take before being delegated insulin injections.
- Will inform you when that required training is implemented and the Department of Health’s (DOH) rules have been updated to reflect the change.
