2008 legislation – E2SHB 2668: Respite CARE SERVICES
Dear Boarding Home Administrator:
New law on providing respite services:
- Recently, the Governor signed Engrossed Second Substitute House Bill (E2SHB) 2668 into law (An act relating to long term care).
- Section 3 of the law is about respite care in BHs.
- Section 3 amends RCW 18.20.350 (Boarding homes - Preadmission assessment - Initial resident service plan).
- Please refer to copy of the bill, which was enclosed with ADSA: BH #2008-008, Nurse Delegation of Insulin Injections.
Beginning June 12, 2008, BHs providing respite services must:
- Obtain sufficient information to meet a resident’s anticipated needs.
- Ensure a resident has assessments when appropriate.
- Involve the resident or resident representative in the development of the plan of care.
- Obtain specific resident information required by the new law.
The BH must obtain all of this information by the time of an individual’s admission into the BH for respite care.
If your BH provides respite, please remember:
- "Respite care" is short-term care for any period in excess of twenty-four continuous hours for a resident to temporarily relieve the family or other caregiver of providing that care. (WAC 388-78A-2020)
- Respite care cannot be used for long-term placement.
Please contact your RCS Field Manager if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Joyce Pashley Stockwell, Director
Residential Care Services
