SUBJECT: Medical Emergency for Residents Receiving Hospice Care

Dear Adult Family Home Provider:

This letter specifically concerns resident medical emergency under Washington Administrative Code 388-76-690 (2)(a) for a resident receiving hospice care delivered by a licensed hospice agency (Chapter 70.127 RCW). It is meant to offer clarification on how the provider may fulfill the departments expectation under its regulations. It is not offered as legal advice.

If a resident is under the care of a licensed hospice agency and there is a medical emergency related to the residents expected hospice death, then the hospice plan must be followed. The plan must be consistent with state law. If the provider has questions related to the expected hospice death, the provider should be directed to the hospice care agency. It is not necessary to contact the local emergency medical service if the emergency is related to the expected hospice death and the situation is being monitored by the hospice agency.

If the medical emergency that is occurring is either unexpected, not covered by the hospice plan of care, or not monitored by the licensed hospice agency, then the provider or resident manager shall immediately contact the local emergency medical service.

If you have questions, please contact the RCS Field Manager in your region.

Sincerely,

Patricia K. Lashway, Director
Residential Care Services
