Relatives as Parents/Kinship Caregivers

The Washington State Kinship Caregivers Support Program (KCSP) provides financial assistance to eligible kinship families to help with the cost of much needed supplies and services.

Resource Guide for Relatives as Parents in WA State (DSHS 22-996)  (Rev. 5/08)

This Resource Guide provides grandparents and other relatives raising children with a wide variety of information and resources. Included in this 81 page booklet is information on special issues facing children in kinship care, financial assistance, legal and custody issues, child care and educational needs, coping strategies, national and local community services, plus much more.

A new law passed by the 2005 Washington State legislature allows adults raising a relative's child to consent to health care.  This brochure explains a relative's rights and responsibilities under the new law.

The information in this brochure contains Washington State Law. DSHS Aging and Disability Services Administration convened the Task Force on the Patient Self-Determination Act to develop this brochure. The Task Force included advocates, lawyers, nursing home administrators, nursing home residents, and state employees.
